PRIVACY POLICY

I know you really don’t want to read yet another privacy policy, but I have to give you this privacy information by law (*eye roll*) so being a law-abiding citizen I'm doing my duty. I've also done my best to have the shortest privacy policy you've ever read while at the same time complying with GDPR.

My website does not collect any humanly readable personal data if you're just visiting. Simple. My website will set a few cookies on your browser, but they're all session cookies necessary to make my website work, and they're deleted as soon as you close your browser.

If you contact me via my website, or by email or carrier pigeon or any other way, I'll obviously have your name and contact details. For data protection purposes I am the 'data controller' of that data.

What will I do with your data?  I will use it only to provide services to you (or to try to), or to keep you as a business contact. I don't carry out any automated decision-making.

On what lawful basis will I use your data? I have to have a lawful basis on which I process your data. So that will be either because it's necessary to fulfil a commission you give me, or if we're just talking, I will use your data on the basis that's in my legitimate interests (and yours) that I can contact you and discuss how I can help. It's also in my legitimate interests to hound you (if I have to) for unpaid bills, to chase you in the hope of getting more work from you, and to do marketing in general. But I hope to trouble you as little as possible for those reasons.

Who will I share your data with? I won’t share your data with anyone, ever, without your consent. The only exception to this is that, like almost everyone else, I use American technology platforms to host my website (Weebly) and to run my email (Google), and so they'll inevitably process your data if you contact me via my website or if we email each other. Weebly's privacy policy is here, and Google's is here.  I've tried, but I can't honestly give you the full story about what they do with data, but if you'd prefer to avoid them please just give me a call. Obviously your data will also be transferred outside the EU as a result, but Google and Weebly are both certified under the EU-US Privacy Shield framework, so it should be safe.

How long will I keep your data? Honestly, for no longer than I have to. If I do proper paid work for you I will keep your data for six years after I send my invoice. In all other cases I will keep your data only while there's a chance we may do business, or while you're a useful business contact.

You have rights! And I have to explain them to you. You have the right:

  • To access a copy of the data I hold about you;
  • To require me to correct any inaccuracies in your data;
  • To withdraw your consent at any time if I've asked for your consent for any processing;
  • To ask me not to process your personal data for direct marketing purposes; and
  • To lodge a complaint about me to the Information Commissioner's Office.

You also have the following rights in certain circumstances:

  • To restrict or object to my use of your personal data;
  • To require me to provide a copy of your personal data to others; and
  • To require me to erase your personal data.

If you want to wield any of these rights please email me at office@sophieross.co.uk or call me on +44 (0)7973 838117. There may be some circumstances in which some rights may not apply.

If you're still reading, thanks! That's all.
